ABSTRACT

This study investigates the effects of four design cues—visual appeal, novelty, interactivity, and symbolism or identity expression on virtual fashion purchase intention among Chinese consumers and examines the mediating role of emotional arousal in these relationships. Drawing on the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) framework, data were collected through an online survey, yielding 605 valid responses, and analyzed using Consistent Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLSc-SEM). The findings reveal that all four design cues are positively associated with both emotional arousal and purchase intention, with interactivity exerting the strongest direct effect on purchase intention. Emotional arousal also has a positive effect on purchase intention and partially mediates the relationships between all four design cues and purchase intention. These findings highlight virtual fashion as a distinctive form of digital consumption in which consumers’ purchase intentions are shaped not only by visual appeal but also by interactivity, symbolic meaning and identity expression, and the emotional responses elicited by these design cues.
