ABSTRACT

This study provides empirical evidence on the relationship between sustainability disclosure quality and firm performance of SET100 companies over the period 2020 – 2024. Empirical results indicate that overall sustainability disclosure quality is positively (negatively) associated with long-term (short-term) firm performance proxied by Tobin’s Q (Return on Assets or ROA). Furthermore, empirical results on individual sustainability disclosure quality (environmental, social, and governance) reveal that, with respect to long-term firm performance, only individual social disclosure quality exhibits a positive association, while no significant relationships are observed for individual environmental and governance disclosure quality. In contrast, for short-term firm performance, no significant associations for all three individual disclosure quality.

This study fills a gap in the existing literature on sustainability disclosure, an area that has become increasingly important over time. The findings suggest that although an emphasis on sustainability often entails costs that may adversely affect firms’ short-term performance, it ultimately contributes positively to firms’ long-term performance. Consequently, the study highlights the benefits for firms of prioritizing sustainability in their business operations.
